Roland Story Varsity Football vs. Nevada
By Evan B.
It’s a Friday night, and everyone is getting ready for the big game in Story City. People are walking into the football field's entrance, gathering around to either get food from the concession stand or find their seats in the stands. Everyone tries to get here early to get the best spots or to save seats for others. This was a game that people did not want to miss due to the big rivalry between the Norsemen and Nevada.
The Norse and Nevada Cubs walked into this game with a record of 1-0; each looking to deliver a loss to the opposing team. Both teams were looking to start their season undefeated in their first two games but only one of them would win tonight.
Both teams' players are warming up on the field with only 10 minutes left until kickoff. People from Roland-Story and Nevada are all here cheering for their own teams. The stands are packed full of people waiting for the game to start.
Both teams have now sent out their 4 team captains to decide who starts with the ball and what way they will go. Nevada won the toss and elected to kick while the Norsemen would receive.
The game has now started with Nevada kicking it off to the Norsemen. The Norsemen's drive with the ball had only ended up with the Norsemen having to punt on 4th & 2, but the Norsemen faked the punt and Sam Knoll ran the ball for a 25-yard run to pick up the first down. The Norsemen keep pushing the ball through the first quarter and score, putting up the first points on the board. Quarterback/kicker Sam Knoll goes to kick the extra point but it was low and was blocked.
It is now 6 to 0 with the Norsemen on top, and the score remains that way for the rest of the first quarter.
The second quarter comes around and the first to score is Nevada with a rushing touchdown. Their PAT attempt is good and they now lead the game with a score of 7 to 6. The Norsemen get the ball back but can’t find a way to get more points on the board.
Nevada then pushes the ball to the Norsemen’s 6-yard line, but the defense stops them and turns the ball over to the Norse. Neither team can score any points for the rest of the second quarter.
After the amazing performance by the Roland-Story Marching Band and Flags during halftime, it is now time for the third quarter to begin. It’s a close game, and people are ready to see what will happen next.
The second half began with the Norsemen kicking it off to Nevada. Both teams were unable to find a way to get into the endzone and this concluded the third quarter. Not one point was added to the scoreboard.
The 4th quarter has now begun and right away Nevada scores a touchdown and a PAT. The score is now 6-14 with Nevada leading the game. The Norsemen are trying to find a way to get back in the game and they have done it. Sam Knoll throws a screen pass to Cody Long for a 34-yard touchdown. They go for two and succeed. The Norsemen are now back in this game with a tied score of 14-14.
Nevada gets the ball back with some time left in the game and tries pushing the ball toward the end zone. Nevada attempts to kick a field goal to go up three points in the last quarter for the win but misses.
Norsemen get the ball back on their 17-yard line and run the ball trying to gain yards which unfortunately ends in a fumble. Nevada was able to recover the ball on the 16-yard line giving them a chance to win the game. With only minutes left on the clock, Nevada found a way to get a touchdown resulting in a score of 16-20. They missed the field goal giving the Norsemen time to attempt a comeback and win this game.
The Norsemen tried to throw some deep pass plays but they ended in incompletions. The Norsemen's last chance at victory was throwing a deep pass that Nevada intercepted. The game ended with a score of 16 points for the Norsemen and 20 points for Nevada.
The Norsemen’s offense was led by quarterback Sam Knoll who went 9/17 with 110 passing yards and 67 rushing yards. Cody Long ended the game with the most receiving yards with four receptions for 64 yards. On the Norsemen's defense, Charlie Watts led the team in tackles with eight.
