The Roland-Story Norsemen volleyball team defeated Greene County in three sets on Senior Night at the Norsemen gym, securing the Conference Championship in front of an excited home crowd. The match took place on October 13, 2025, and the Norsemen showed strong teamwork, energy and focus from start to finish. From the first serve, Roland-Story set the tone. They took the opening set 25-19, keeping good control even if some rallies were really close. The second set was dominated by the Norsemen, ending in a strong 25-7 win thanks to good serving runs and solid defense. The last set was more close, with Greene County fighting hard to stay in the game, but Roland-Story kept their composure and finished the sweep 25-22. The team’s constancy and determination during the match showed how much effort and unity they had this season. By Riley J. The girls Varsity Volleyball team went to Bondurant to play in a tournament. They went 4-2. First playing Winterset, the girls beat them in the first two sets. Next, they played a highly ranked team, Pella. They lost the first two sets, but it was a close match. Next up, they played Red Oak. Roland-Story, winning the first set and losing the second, went into a third set. They ended up losing by three points to another ranked Red Oak team. Then it was time for pool play! They first beat Pella Christian in the first two sets and then beat DM Roosevelt in three! Finally, the girls played Gilbert. They had lots of energy because they wanted to go home and swept the Gilbert Tigers in two sets. They were now 8-2 for the overall season!

By Miley G. On the first day of school, August 25th, the Roland-Story varsity volleyball team opened its season by hosting the annual "Early Bird" quad. The Norse came ready to play, facing off against South Hamilton, Central Springs, and Webster City. They displayed dominant form from the start, taking down South Hamilton in two sets with scores of 21-13 and 21-8. The team kept its momentum going by defeating Central Springs handily (21-6, 21-6), followed by a victory over Webster City (21-13, 22-20). By sweeping all three opponents, the Roland-Story volleyball team started its season an impressive 3-0!

By Alli J. The Roland-Story Volleyball team welcomed the Clear Lake Lions for the 3A quarterfinal match on October 22. They have had a very successful season. The Roland-Story volleyball team set the record for the number of games won in a season. Roland-Story is the conference champion and remains undefeated within the conference. Roland-Story entered the game with a record of 29-4. Clear Lake entered with a record of 13-15. This was not the first time that these two teams competed against each other this season. Earlier in the season, they met at the Forest City tournament where Roland-Story came out with a win.  Roland-Story took the lead early in the game and finished the first set with a score of 25-15. Set 2 also went to the Norsemen with a score of 25-9. Lastly, Roland-Story finished out the match with a score of 25-9 in the last set. The Quarterfinal match went to the Norsemen. By Caitlyn F. On Monday night, October 7th, the Roland-Story volleyball team played a conference match against the PCM Mustangs. It was senior citizen night for the student section and the stands were full. This was a big day for the team because it was senior night for the six seniors on the team, Kate Berggren, Caty Erichsen, Kennedy Petersen, Paige Curtis, Josie Ramus, and Kamryn Lande. These girls have been a big part of this team, and it was an emotional night for the whole team.  After the seniors were recognized, the captains from both teams were called to flip the coin to decide who would serve first. PCM won the coin toss. The first serve went to senior Josie Ramus who passed a perfect pass right to setter Miley Geise who then set it to Kamryn Lande for the middle kill. By Taryn P. This 2024 Roland-Story JV team is off to a great start this year. The team intends to have a great season ahead of them with just a few games left. As a JV team, they have a ton of different strengths.  Head coach for JV Kelsey Polaski said, “We talk about things we need from each other whether it’s physical touch to calm us or words of encouragement.”  As she has said the players all like to boost each other up in the games, feeling it allows the players to connect to each other better if they have something that they know everyone likes from each other. This can be anything from a high five, words of encouragement, or even their word. Everyone on the team has words that they like to look at during games in Nevada and wrote them on their hands.  This year the JV's team toughest match so far has been against rival Nevada. By Kamryn L. The Roland-Story Volleyball team had a very successful season, although it did not end the way they had hoped. They wrapped up their season in the middle of October after losing in the second-round regionals to Union. They ended the season with a record of 25-12. They finished 2nd in conference behind Nevada, who took the conference title.  There were six players who made the HOIAC All-Conference team. Ali Charlson, Kamryn Lande, and Brookelyn Jondle made first team; Grace Dowling made second team; and Madelyn Risdal and Miley Geise were honorable mentions. There were also many juniors and seniors who were awarded academic all-conference.  The seniors will be greatly missed as they contributed so much to the team. The end-of-season banquet was on Sunday, November 5, to wrap up the season, which gave coaches the chance to hand out awards and for the team to look back and reflect on the season. The team is looking forward to what next year will bring! 

By Josie R. The 2023 Roland-Story volleyball team has a very talented group of girls; they are expected to have big wins and tough matches this year. This team comes with many strengths according to assistant Coach Lettow. She said, “We have a solid core group of senior leaders that provide lots of knowledge and experience, but we also have very talented underclassmen. We are also balanced offensively and defensively and have a deep bench.” The girls’ main goal for the season is to win the conference and make their season as long as possible. There are also some challenges the volleyball team might face this year, but with the right mindset and motivation, they will be able to overcome those challenges.
