Report: October School Board Meeting

By Leila W.

On Monday, October 14th, many topics were discussed at the Roland-Story High School school board meeting.

The school board members are Chris McIlrath, Erica Watts, Matt Dahlsten, Ashlee Mullenbach, and Tosha Whipple. There were also two other speakers present, Mr. Patton and Rylee Wolf.

The topic of middle school lockers was mentioned among the board members. It was brought up that the state of the current lockers are deteriorating with broken locks and shelves. Everyone was in agreement that the middle school needs new lockers.

Another subject that was brought up was the fall fundraisers including FCCLA, band, and choir. The funding goes to support our school trips and other activities. This year the band is going on a trip to Florida over spring break and next year Spanish is going on their trip to Spain. Spanish also previously took a trip last spring break to Costa Rica.

One of the main topics that was discussed was make-up school days. They talked about how Christmas and spring break affect when students get out of school. State law requires 180 days or 1080 hours of school. Roland-Story makes school days up at the end of the year rather than spring break because they try to match Iowa State's spring break. They talked about other options for snow days considering last year's students did not get out of school until the 5th of June.

The last subject they mentioned was renovations. The goal is to not do any big renovations but to do things slowly over time. There is a need for facility updates around all three schools. Some other necessary renovations are new welding machines and updated classrooms. Specifically, the FCS classroom at the high school needs updated kitchens.

The meeting discussed many topics, passing all of the ones presented. The meeting openly spoke on ways to improve our school and community. The next school board meeting will take place on Monday, November 11th at Roland-Story High School.
