A Student Voice for School Board
By Kate B.
The Roland-Story School Board held a meeting on Tuesday, September 12, with a new member present. Roland-Story student Emilia Broich attended as a student-representative on the school board. Emilia Broich is a senior at Roland-Story High School. She is involved in various activities. As of this year, she has been attending the school board meetings as a representative of the student body. The board meets on the second Monday of every month. During the September meeting, she gave input on the new stadium and discussed how students feel about various fundraisers.
When Broich was asked about the benefits of having a student voice on the school board, she answered, “The benefit of having a student on the board provides opportunities. Opportunities for the school board to understand how their decisions are impacting the student body. Opportunities for students to understand how decisions are made and how the school works. It also gives an opportunity for the student (representative) to be civically engaged.”
Emilia Broich’s role on the board is very important and helpful for the administration. “My role during the school board is to give feedback to the board on things they are discussing,” said Broich. “It is so important to have a student voice on the school board. By no fault of the board, the board doesn’t walk in the halls and feel the direct impact of the decisions they are making.” Emilia Broich’s student voice impacts the school board’s decision by giving a student’s perspective on how the school operates.
The next school board meeting will be held in October. Broich will have the opportunity to attend and speak on behalf of the students. She will be able to give input about the new stadium after the Roland-Story football team has been able to play several home games in the updated facility. The board appreciates Emilia Broich’s contributions, and she is making a difference for the Roland-Story School District.
