New Cellphone Policy
By Ryan D.
The students of Roland Story High School start the school year off with new rules, curriculums, and teachers. One of the new rules for students is the cell phone policy. How has this impacted classrooms and students this new school year?
In short, the cell phone policy states that students are to only use their phones before, in between classes, and after school. If they’re caught on their phones during class without permission from a teacher, their phone is taken to the office for the rest of the day. Then at the beginning of the next five days, you will need to bring it to the office where it will be kept there all day until you retrieve it once the school day is done. If you get caught again with your phone during class without permission, your phone is taken and it’s kept in the office for even more school days.
The principal of Roland-Story, Mr. Mcquillen, says that leadership team members helped create the cell phone policy. “We talked to other schools and reviewed their policies and rules and tweaked them the way that we wanted to to create this policy” Mr. Mcquillen states about how they achieved this idea for the policy. Last school year, there were no rules or guidelines about cell phones so, he wanted to have more control over them.
He said that he likes that they haven’t completely banned cellphones, but instead have more rules and regulations for them. His goal for this policy is to help students learn the appropriate time to be on their cell phones and to give the students fewer distractions to renew focus on academics.
This will help students when they’re at college or their job, to know the appropriate time to be on their phones. Over the next few years, he thinks that we will be able to achieve this goal and help individuals control their addictions.
Even though most students dislike the new cell phone policy, the school intends to help teach students about self-control and to help them focus on their academics.
